AFFILIATES, PARTNERS, AND MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATIONS

Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes

The Consortium of Humanities Centers and Institutes (CHCI) is an international membership organization for university and college-based humanities centers, institutes, and interdisciplinary programs in the humanities with a significant research component. The Franklin Humanities Institute is pleased to be the administrative base of CHCI through 2012.

Dahlem Humanities Center

The FHI has established an ongoing, flexible partnership with this new, interdisciplinary humanities organization at the Freie Universitat Berlin.

Duke Human Rights Center

The Duke Human Rights Center (DHRC) brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars to promote new understandings of pressing questions about human rights, terror, political violence and the politics of forgiveness, accountability and reconciliation. The FHI is providing administrative and programmatic support for the DHRC in its first years as a formal unit at Duke.

Duke University Press

Duke University Press is a premier scholarly publisher in key interdisciplinary areas such as cultural anthropology, cultural studies, American studies, Latin American studies, and critical race studies. The Press has also been one of the most active academic presses in the nation in mentoring promising graduate students and junior faculty in the humanities. The FHI and DUP are frequent collaborators, and have in the past offered an internship program for Duke students as well as publishing workshops. The FHI and DUP are also partners in the John Hope Franklin Center Book Awards program. In this program, DUP publishes four books annually under the Franklin Center Book imprint. These titles — all of which relate to the overall
mission of the FHI — are chosen jointly by the Duke University Press faculty Board of Advisors and the Seminar Fellows, and costs of publication and marketing are supported by a generous subsidy from the Office of the Provost. Click here for more information on the Franklin Center Books program.

HASTAC

HASTAC (Humanities, Arts, Sciences, Technology Advanced Collaboratory) is an international group of academic organizations dedicated to exploring and sharing information about the use of new media and technology in higher education. The FHI has been pleased to provide various forms of support for HASTAC activities since 2006, and served as the co-host of the first HASTAC annual meeting, in April 2007.

Institute for the Arts and Humanities

The Institute for the Arts & Humanities is the FHI’s sister organization at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a frequent collaborator and partner.

Interdisciplinary Studies at Duke

John Hope Franklin Center

The John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies is the home of the Franklin Humanities Institute, as well as 23 other interdisciplinary units and programs.

Scholars at Risk Network

The Scholars at Risk Network (SAR) is an international network of universities and colleges responding to these attacks. SAR promotes academic freedom and defends the human rights of scholars and their communities worldwide. Duke is a member of the SAR network and hosts at least one scholar each year.

University Scholars Program

The FHI has begun a multi-faceted partnership with Duke’s University Scholars program, devoted to generating involvement in FHI programs on the part of this unique and gifted group of young scholars.

Designed to stimulate an interdisciplinary, intergenerational community of scholars, the University Scholars Program was created in 1998 by the Office of the Vice-Provost of Interdisciplinary Studies with a gift from Duke University Trustee Emerita Melinda French Gates and her husband Bill Gates, through the William H. Gates Foundation. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional school University Scholars are selected for their ability to explore new academic horizons. They represent a range of personal and intellectual backgrounds and share an excitement for original research, collaborative thinking, and innovative scholarship.
